If you are injured while working, it is probably best if it isn’t in Texas. Under Rick Perry, Worker’s Compensation coverage is the lowest in the United States (from a report by the Texas Legislative Study Group).
In a report from the Texas Legislative Study Group, Texas is ranked as the worst offender in all of the following categories:
- Amount of Carbon Dioxide Emissions
- Amount of Volatile Organic Compounds Released into Air
- Amount of Toxic Chemicals Released into Water
- Amount of Recognized Cancer-Causing Carcinogens Released into Air
- Amount of Hazardous Waste Generated
According to a report by the Texas Legislative Study Group, Texas ranks 50th out of 50 when it come to women receiving pre-natal care in the first trimester.
According to the Texas Legislative Study Group, under Rick Perry, Texas ranks last in the country in the percentage of non-elderly women with health insurance. In other words, other than the elderly, if you are a woman, you are more likely to not have health insurance coverage in Texas than anywhere else in the United States.
Food security for a household means access by all members at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life. Food security includes at a minimum (1) the ready availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, and (2) an assured ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (that is, without resorting to emergency food supplies, scavenging, stealing, or other coping strategies). Food insecurity is the absence of those conditions. Texas is ranked #2 in food insecurity, behind Mississippi, with 16.3% of households reporting food insecurity.
According to a report from the Texas Legislative Study Group, Governor and now Presidential candidate Rick Perry’s state ranks 48th among all 50 states in the percentage of residents that are covered by employer-based healthcare.
Noted in a report from the Texas Legislative Study Group, Texas has the highest percentage of adults over 25 without a high school diploma.
Individuals without a degree have a higher rate of unemployment and lower income.
Rick Perry is touting the job creation in Texas under his stewardship. What he does not note is that his state has the highest percentage of minimum-wage jobs in the country at 12.6%. Of these jobs, 11.1% are below minimum wage.
The next highest percentage of minimum wage jobs is in New York, and 6.1%, less than half of the Texas rate.
Governor Rick Perry announced his candidacy for President on August 13th, 2010. At that time, the state of Texas was ranked 4th out of 50 states for having the highest level of poverty. The only states with higher poverty levels were Mississippi, Arizona and New Mexico. The District of Columbia also had a higher rate of poverty.
In a fall 2010 interview with Newsweek, Rick Perry was asked if he would run for President:
… and that you have no interest in running president. Still the case?
Not going to run for president. Not going to be a vice-presidential candidate. Not going to be in anybody’s cabinet. And I suspect I’m not going to be anybody’s ambassador either.
Perry is expected to announce his candidacy on Saturday, 8/13/11, less than one year later. Given the time it takes to organize a campaign, was he telling the truth in the interview?
